At this nascent point of my career, apart from having over 60 IMDb credits, there aren’t many worthwhile things to say. I’ll give it a go, though.
Been a Chicagoan all my life and since Cronenberg made a career out of living in Vancouver, I don’t see any reason to leave. Some people thrive in school settings and enjoy the structure they provide. I’m not one of those, so I’m self-taught in everything I do. Writing, drawing, directing, and on and on. In relation to filmmaking, I lucked-out by coming up during the perfect time for autodidacts. I owe a chunk of learning to DVDs and Blu-rays. Ditto books and interviews online, plus episodes of INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO and CHARLIE ROSE (though the latter tastes bitter, these days). The shows were particularly important because actors and actresses talked about their craft in honest ways that they don’t during usual interviews. One of the best ways to be a great director is to know how to work with performers, so I went out of my way to learn their language.
A few years ago, I decided to create films that either have a predominantly or only female cast. I like women and saw that there weren’t many films that used them properly. Over the course of time, my decision became more political because that’s where the world went, but I was fine with that. Still am. I don’t differentiate twixt “high-brow” or “low-brow” entertainment. Chantal Akerman and BARRY LYNDON are as valid to me as Sam Raimi and MARRIED… WITH CHILDREN. I shamelessly take inspiration for everything I like, from music to comics to novels to video games to television to cinema. Why restrict myself to one medium when art can only be made better with richness? I wrote and self-published a novel, LIE, about four friends who go on a getaway to help one of them through a tough time (you can get wherever eBooks are). I wanna write more as well as plays and music, but filmmaking’s the grand stage I wanna properly enter the world on, though, so I’m focusing on that.
After WAKE UP ALONE, I basically wanna bounce twixt stories that are abysmally dismal and absolutely daffy. Keeps people on their toes and keeps me from being bored/boring.
