Daily Dialogue: The Pity of Ghosts

Trying something a little different today. I’m still giving myself 20 minutes, but I have an idea this time.

Taylor
Oh no. Oh no, not again.

Abigail
Disturbed, Mr. Taylor? By the hauntings of your past?

Taylor
I did everything I was supposed to! I’ve repented and dedicated whatever life I have left to helping people!

Abigail
Promises and deeds for the living, Mr. Taylor. And what of the dead? What of those who weren’t so lucky to have crossed your path before your reformation? What of those who were the cause of it?

Taylor
I’ve apologized… I’ve said that I’m sorry every single night for the past 17 years! Isn’t that enough?!

Abigail
Words, words, words. Almost as vaporous as the form you’ve blessed me with. And you have blessed me, Mr. Taylor. Do you know what the word truly means, “blessed”? It stems from a French word that means “to wound”. You have blessed me more than most ever would another human, Mr. Taylor.

Taylor
I was a young man then! I thought that… thought that women were just things to be used and thrown away!

Abigail
I’m intimately aware of your youthful thoughts.

Taylor
After I… ended… you…

Abigail
After you murdered me. I had to have a closed-casket funeral because the blessing you gave my throat was so deep that the undertaker stood defeated. It whistled as the wind blew away my shroud.

Taylor
After I ended you, I saw my errors and demanded myself to change!

Emma
But not before offering more blessings, yes?

Katherine
So many blessings.

Nancy
Don’t think that suicide will save you, Mr. Taylor.

Ophelia
We have asked favors of the ether.

Paulina
You are going to live for a very, very long time. You are going to be very, very healthy.

Bethany
And you will be in the company of misery ones. Night after night after night after night.

Wanda
Until we are done with you.

Georgette
Sadly, we do not bore easily, Mr. Taylor.

Abigail
So you will have to enjoy your blessings for all time.
