Daily Dialogue: Avoiding China

Mischief never sleeps, so nothing’s gonna stop these two from talking about whatever, whenever, wherever (sorry for the forced Shakira reference) for 20 minutes.

Sandra
What’s with the plates? I thought we were going out.

Terri
We are, I’m just washing them.

Sandra
You’re washing plates even though you’re not using them? Have you been near any inhalants today?

Terri
No, nothing like that. I’m getting rid of them tomorrow and wanna make sure that they’re clean.

Sandra
Why are you getting rid of them? They look expensive.

Terri
Exactly why. I don’t need something so extravagant for something so mundane.

Sandra
How did you come across them?

Terri
My mother gave them to me.

Sandra
Well, that’s as good as any reason to keep something. Are you hard-up for money?

Terri
No.

Sandra
Then why are you getting rid of them? And who’s buying them?

Terri
Someone on Craigslist. My mother died Monday.

Sandra
Oh no, I’m so sorry.

Terri
Why does everyone always apologize for things they had nothing to do with? I understand that they wanna be comforting but, fuck, be relevant.

Sandra
That explains a few things, then.

Terri
No, that doesn’t. I’ve always hated those plates, and now I have a reason to get rid of them.

Sandra
I mean your attitude lately.

Terri
What attitude?

Sandra
You’re a little colder.

Terri
It’s Winter, everyone’s a little colder.

Sandra
I think you know what I mean.

Terri
No, I don’t think I know what you mean. Let’s just drop it, I don’t wanna leave here in a bad mood.

Sandra
So what do you wanna talk about?

Terri
Where my sponge is.

Sandra
In the sink. We’re in the living room.

Terri
Oh, right… Right.

Sandra
How much are you getting?

Terri
It’s only one sponge.

Sandra
The plates.

Terri
Oh. A few hundred dollars.

Sandra
That’s not bad.

Terri
Some would say that’s good.

Sandra
Why did your mother get them?

Terri
A mom thing, I guess. I always see a cabinet of China no one’s allowed to use in every mother’s house I’m in. It’s like they have an uncontrollable pull towards porcelain.

Sandra
Heh, you’re right. Good thing we’ll never have that problem.

Terri
Yeah, babies are stupid. You’re gonna leave them alone forever someday, anyway.

Sandra
I see.

Terri
Where’s that damn sponge?

Sandra
In the… In the kitchen.

Terri
Oh yeah. It just seems so far away, y’know?

Sandra
It’s the next room ov– Sure.

Terri
That guy’s gonna come by tomorrow so I better do a good job… We’re going out tonight, right?

Sandra
Yeah, after you wash the dishes.

Terri
Right, duh. Where’s that fucking sponge?
