Daily Dialogue: Between the Lines

An idea came to me earlier, so this 20-minute writing challenge won’t be as unguided as usual.

Carol
Can you come by today?

Ellen
Not sure, why?

Carol
I could use someone to talk to.

Ellen
Aww. We’re talking now.

Carol
I know, but it’s not the same as someone being here.

Ellen
Have you tried anyone else?

Carol
They’re busy for one reason or another. Too busy for me.

Ellen
Ah, don’t say that. People do have lives, though. Sometimes, they all happen at once. I can’t come by, but I can spend some time on the phone with you until my date gets here. Better than nothing, right?

Carol
I guess. Who’s the date with?

Ellen
Nuh-uh, this is about you, not me. What did you wanna talk about?

Carol
I dunno… Just… talk?

Ellen
C’mon, you gotta do better than that. You wouldn’t call me sounding the way you do unless you had a problem. Gas?

Carol
What?

Ellen
If you drink something fizzy like ginger ale, your stomach’ll pass–

Carol
It’s not gas.

Ellen
Well, throw me a bone.

Carol
I can’t talk about it.

Ellen
Why not?

Carol
PLEASE– Can we just talk for a while? Please?

Ellen
Ok… About what I’m wearing?

Carol
No, it’s usually something you got for a lot less than you should’ve paid for.

Ellen
I’m not sure whether to be proud or offended, but since I still wanna be your friend for a while longer, I’ll be proud.

Carol
Yeah. A little while longer.

Ellen
Leave the melodrama for Oscar season, eh? C’mon, I’m trying to talk to you!

Carol
I know… How’s your sister?

Ellen
She’s good. Ish. Childbirth puts women in a particular mindset. And those around her on a minefield.

Carol
Oh yeah, she was pregnant.

Ellen
Emphasis on “was,” hopefully. She’s been in labor for hours. Ugh, I couldn’t do it. Give me kids when they’re four so I can dress them up, then take them away when they can’t fit.

Carol
What would you dress them up as?

Ellen
Tiny versions of EVERYTHING. They’d be so adorable, no matter how terrifying they’d be normally. I mean, who could say no to Baby Hannibal Lecter?

Carol
Heh. I guess no one.

Ellen
There ya go. I hope you’re feeling better because my date’s here.

Carol
I’m not but I’ll get over it. Pills will help. Thanks for being a good friend, Ellen.

Ellen
Sure?

Carol
I won’t be here tomorrow, but you can pick up that book of mine you wanted.

Ellen
That’s your favorite… Wait, where are you going?

Carol
Goodbye, Carol.
