Daily Dialogue: Stitched for Love

Forty minutes a day, two imaginary women tell me what to write. I don’t ask questions. I just tell ’em when to stop.

Agatha
Did you steal the body?

Marnie
Yes, it’s in the lab, flayed and prepared for you.

Agatha
Good… good. Which sex is it?

Marnie
Female, madam. The male did not take last time.

Agatha
I was sure he would have… No matter. A genius who lingers on their defeats is a genius wasted. What of her organs?

Marnie
She was smothered in a fire, so they are tainted with the stain of smoke and ash.

Agatha
A wooden flame?

Marnie
Yes, madam.

Agatha
Good. The fuel being organic in nature means that her innards are still worthwhile. What have you done with her skin?

Marnie
The bleaching process is in motion. I have the proper needle and thread to reattach it to the corpse.

Agatha
To the specimen, Marnie. She belongs to science now, not the rot of nature. And thank you for procuring the correct needle.

Marnie
It was not easy, madam, for it was only available in a place leagues away.

Agatha
As always, I am very grateful for your dedication to my cause.

Marnie
To you. You saved me. Any worth my life has from that point goes to your coffers.

Agatha
A worth that won’t ever be taken advantage of, be sure. How much longer will the bleaching take?

Marnie
She is of African decent, so it will take slightly longer than usual. If rushed, the skin will rapidly decay into the puddle we are all too aware of.

Agatha
Yes… Patience, though virtuous, is agony.

Marnie
But it is for the best, madam. If this goes well, you will, at last, have a body that will take you to your next hundred years.

Agatha
Surely you understand my frustration? I am too feeble, too ruined to even touch your face.

Marnie
I take your hand and press it to my flesh… Does this not please you enough for the moment?

Agatha
My pleasures for you have been starved for a very long time. What you are doing should be satisfying crumbs to the starved, yet they are swallowed air of the deranged.

Marnie
Oh…

Agatha
I did not wish to depress you. I merely looked at my reflection, but forgot that you stood next to me.

Marnie
I will always stand next to you. Whether or not this experiment fails, whether or not the next thousand fail, whether or not you eventually…

Agatha
Put such damnable thoughts out of your mind.

Marnie
Forgive me, but despair has taken me momentarily. The mistakes of the past are like iron bells in my mind.

Agatha
Tonight will burn the tower in which they ring. I promise you. Look at me, Marnie.

Marnie
I am…

Agatha
This is the last day this face will lovingly gaze at you. Tomorrow, you will have a new face to love. New hands to caress you. A new heart to hold you in.

Marnie
Yes, madam.

Agatha
And you will no longer need to acknowledge me so formally.

Marnie
I am sorry, madam.

Agatha
Do you know what the missing instrument might be that keeps failure at our door?

Marnie
No.

Agatha
Your surrender.

Marnie
But I have given you everything!

Agatha
And have put me on a gilded pedestal. You have to surrender your thoughts of me, as well. You must see me for what I am. A woman, not an ideal.

Marnie
But how, madam?

Agatha
Agatha. Call me Agatha.

Marnie
…Agatha. It just feels so–

Agatha
Say it again. Repeat it with thoughts of me.

Marnie
Agatha. Agatha. Agatha the Lovely. Agatha the Divine. Agatha the Keeper of My Heart.

Agatha
Keep going.

Marnie
Agatha the Woman. Agatha the Scientist. Agatha the Genius. Agatha the… the Old. Agatha the Feeble. Agatha the Weak. The Wasted. The Useless.

Agatha
Marnie, you are being cruel…

Marnie
The Bitch. The Flaccid. The User. The Deceiver.

Agatha
Marnie!

Marnie
I’ve taken you off the pedestal and see you for what horrid refuse you are. No good to me.

Agatha
You are mad!

Marnie
I’m free.
