Daily Dialogue: Lady of Misrule

Forty minutes a day, I toss two imaginary women on the screen and write whatever they say.

Janet
What are you burning?

Sharon
Junk.

Janet
Won’t neighbors call the fire department?

Sharon
It’s legal here to burn junk in your yard if it’s small enough. If someone comes, I’ll point them to the law and tell them to fuck off.

Janet
Are you ok? You haven’t posted anything on your blog in a while and none of us have heard from you.

Sharon
I’m breathing, isn’t that enough?

Janet
Hopefully it’s not that smoke. Wow, it’s so black. What burns black?

Sharon
Tires. And plastic.

Janet
Why would you burn a tire?

Sharon
I’m not. I’m burning plastic.

Janet
What do you have that’s junk and plastic that you’d burn?

Sharon
My future in effigy.

Janet
What? What are you talking… Is that your laptop?

Sharon
And the game projects I had.

Janet
Why?

Sharon
Why what?

Janet
Why are you burning up those things? They were your life.

Sharon
No point.

Janet
What do you mean there’s no point?

Sharon
My job doesn’t respect women, so I’m done with it.

Janet
What’re you talking about? How can a job hate women?

Sharon
Do you have your phone with you?

Janet
Yeah.

Sharon
Look up “Gamergate.”

Janet
What’s that?

Sharon
The world sending women a very clear signal. We’re meant to do everything except what we want to do.

Janet
Is that all?

Sharon
“Is that all?”

Janet
Men in power have always hated women, what’s your point?

Sharon
You’re ok with that?

Janet
Of course I’m not ok with that. But that’s life as a woman in the free world.

Sharon
Do you hear yourself?

Janet
Yeah. Come on, you can’t tell me that you’re just now noticing that women are treated like shit.

Sharon
No, but it’s never cost me my ambition.

Janet
Well, there you go. It’s only a problem when it’s your problem.

Sharon
You have to care, though. Right?

Janet
I’m a lottery winner, I don’t have to care about shit. The only thing more powerful than men in this world is money.

Sharon
Not every woman can be so lucky.

Janet
You’re right, but what can I do?

Sharon
You can use your money to help me. To help women.

Janet
I’ve been scrolling through my phone looking at this Gamergate thing, and do you know what I noticed? Half of video game culture is made up of women, right? Women are the ones who are getting attacked online, right?

Sharon
Viciously.

Janet
Why isn’t half the gaming community complaining?

Sharon
People ARE complaining!

Janet
Half? Is it half? Tell me it’s half and I’ll apologize.

Sharon
It’s not, but–

Janet
But quality over quantity, right? That’s why female gamers and game journalists are treated so well. Oh wait, they’re not. In fact, some of them are quitting. Right in front of me.

Sharon
It’s just so hard… You don’t know what it’s like, getting so much bile thrown at you. And death threats.

Janet
Don’t I? You think gamer girls are the only ones who get treated like shit? I’ll tell you why Gamergate is still going on. It’s only because of one of two reasons: women are either scared or complacent.

Sharon
How the fuck can women be complacent when such a horrible thing is happening to other women?

Janet
Are you familiar with suffragettes?

Sharon
Yeah.

Janet
Well, while they were fighting for equality for women, they were treated terribly by men AND women.

Sharon
What? Why?

Janet
How dare a woman get uppitty? She should be satisfied with life as it is! And other some such setback fuckery.

Sharon
But that’s sick.

Janet
And sad. But true. Some women out there don’t wanna rock the boat, even though it’s filled with corpses of the past. It’s not just gamers and suffragettes. Women in all sorts of realms who want something better for the whole are beaten down by the ignorant majority. It doesn’t just apply to women. Being rich has left me with a ton of free time that I spend with history books. Because of that, I’ve developed a clearer vision of humanity and humanity’s history than most. Wanna know what I found out?

Sharon
No.

Janet
People will always choose the comfy path. Even if the difficult path leads to a better path. Go ahead, try to deny that and tell me if you’d rather order a pizza or make a pizza.

Sharon
Some people chose the difficult path.

Janet
They do, and some make it. Most get beaten down, or give up. Burning their future in effigy.

Sharon
I… I…

Janet
Knowing what I just told you and accepting it, what’re you gonna do now?

Sharon
Huh?

Janet
Are you gonna watch your world burn or are you gonna make a better one?

Sharon
But my laptop… It’s too late to save it.

Janet
You can buy a newer one. A better one. Heck, I’ll buy it for you.

Sharon
But the world hates women.

Janet
So give up. Lie on your back, wait to get fucked, pop out a kid, and die.

Sharon
I… I can do so much more.

Janet
Yeah? It’s gonna be hard. Even more so when you finish your first game and ALL eyes will be on you. You think life’s bad now, when no one knows you. Ha! Wait ’til your face is in an article. So, which is it gonna be? Burn or build?

  1. This is great! Thanks ☺ it’s what I needed to hear today.

    • I’m glad you liked it. I was prepared for no one to like it, and for people to tell me how strongly they didn’t. But I’ve had at least three people enjoy what I wrote, and that’s good enough for me. I know how hard it is to walk the line twixt being informative and being didactic, so I paid very close attention to how near the soapbox I got. Ending it without telling someone what to do helped, I think. Ditto not coming down too hard on Sharon. I also wanted it to be a sort of history lesson, to point out how sad and cyclical hate for women is. But enough about my heavy-handed intentions… What about today (or rather, yesterday now) made this a good read?

      • It encouraged new thinking about my words and actions, and helped me to consider my daily routine. It almost had me dissatisfied with myself, and afterwards I was annoyed because I didn’t do more for any of my causes that day. It’s an inspirational piece, and I thought it was very well done.

      • That’s really great. The world looks forward to the change you’ll help make. I mean, an ecofeminist can only bring good.

      • Thank you! I try to do my best ☺ your thought provoking writing also benefits the world. Keep up the good work-related and have a great day ☺
